- 7-Zip
- This is the best program I've found for handling compressed files. The interface could be better, but it can open just about anything.
- Audacity
- This is a really nice program for working with audio files.
- CDex
- This is a good program for creating MP3 files out of CD's and WAV files.
- DC++
- This is a wonderful P2P program. Adware/spyware free, and it forces people to share so there's lots of stuff to download.
- FileZilla
- This is a good program for working with FTP.
- guliverkli (Media Player Classic)
- This is a great little program for playing DVD's. Single file and no installation required.
- ModPlug Tracker
- This is a descent program for composing music. It does a good job, but can be a hassle when making major changes to a song.
- Pidgin
- This is a decent program for handling multiple instant messenger services. I'm not too fond of GTK+, but this program is still better than anything else out there.
- Pueblo
- This is a nice program for playing MUD's ... if anyone plays those anymore.
- Synergy
- This is a very handy program if you work on more than one computer. You can drag your mouse between computers and even copy and paste from one computer to the other.
- TPTEST
- This is a small and accurate program for testing your bandwidth. If you want to know how fast your internet connection is, use this instead of a web site that does it.
- Tux Racer
- This is a simple but fun game where you try and collect fish while racing Tux (the Linux penguin) down snow and ice covered hills.
- VirtualDub
- This is a great program for working with AVI files.
Software
- Jasc Paint Shop Pro
- This is a great program for working with photos. There is a huge varity of tools, effects, and filters to help make good pictures look great and bad pictures look better. It's also pretty good for art.

- Buzz is software synthesizer, tracker, and sequencer put into one program. It is completely free and very easy to use once you get the hang of how it works.
- Macromedia Fireworks
- This program was designed around creating graphics for the internet but it's a great program for drawing too. It is very easy to use and has a lot of helpful tools.
- Macromedia Flash
- Flash has got a bad reputation for being an extremely bloated form of media that creates massive sized files for things. This is very untrue. Flash is very powerful and efficient for what it does, and if done right a flash file is much smaller than any other form of media.
- Mozilla Firefox
- This is probably the best web browser that has ever existed. It is fast, stable, safe, and does everything right.
- Mozilla Thunderbird
